Iowa’s New Hands-Free Driving Law
What Absolute Group Employees Need to Know
DES MOINES, Iowa – July 7, 2025
As of July 1, 2025, Iowa’s new Hands-Free Driving Law is in effect, marking a significant step toward safer roads for all Iowans, including Absolute Group employees who drive for work or commute. Signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds on April 2, 2025, as Senate File 22, Iowa becomes the 31st state to implement hands-free legislation aimed at reducing distracted driving. Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and safe on the road.
What Does the Law Mean for You?
The law prohibits drivers from holding or using electronic devices, such as cell phones, while driving unless the device is in hands-free mode. This includes:
No holding your phone to scroll, type, or enter GPS coordinates.
No making or answering calls unless using voice-activated features, speakerphone, or Bluetooth.
No video calls, streaming, or viewing content, even with voice commands.
Distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes in Iowa, with over 900 incidents last year linked to phone use, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. By adopting this law, Iowa aims to curb these preventable accidents, ensuring safer commutes for employees like you.
Enforcement and Penalties
From now through December 31, 2025, law enforcement is issuing warnings to educate drivers about the new rules. Starting January 1, 2026, violations will result in fines exceeding $100, which could also impact your insurance rates. Absolute Group encourages all employees to adapt now to avoid penalties later.
On the first day of enforcement, July 1, 2025, Iowa law enforcement issued 201 warnings statewide, showing their commitment to raising awareness. “This law is about saving lives,” said Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol. “Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.”
How to Comply
You don’t need expensive equipment to follow the law. Simple solutions include:
Phone mounts: Secure your device for easy viewing without holding it.
Bluetooth or speakerphone: Use these for calls to keep your hands free.
Voice commands: Set up GPS or music playlists before driving.
Auxiliary cables: Connect your device for audio without interaction.
Absolute Group is committed to your safety and compliance. If you use company vehicles or drive for work, ensure your phone is set up for hands-free use before hitting the road.
